How long can I expect my necklace to last?

Your necklace is a fine quality piece of jewellery, and should be cared for as per the care and use instructions.

As your necklace is strung on a natural fibre, it will inevitably perish after some time. Any sellers who state that a baby necklace will last for ever are being deceptive.

How long your necklace does last is the important thing. This is dependant on a few things:

  1. Your skin type. As some skins are more acidic than others, some people will perish the silk faster (just as some people will turn silver black).

  1. How often it is worn. If you wear your necklace every day, you can expect that it will wear out more quickly, as it is exposed to acid containing oils from your skin, as well as salt from sweat, more often.

  1. How you care for your necklace. If you care for your necklace as per the care and use instructions, it will greatly pro-long the life of the silk cord. If you allow the necklace to get wet frequently, the cord can become brittle. Allowing body creams, sunscreens, repellants, deodorants and perfumes to get on the necklace can clog the silk, allowing dust and other fine particles to get stuck in the fibres, speeding deterioration. Disencouraging  your child from tugging , sucking or chewing on the necklace is also very important.

Selkiedesigns Care and Use Instructions:

-Always wear the necklace against the skin.

-Necklaces are for wearing only, not for chewing.

-Children should be supervised whilst wearing the necklace.

-I recommend removing the necklace for sleep times. You can Wrap it around your childs ankle, so they still recieve the benefit of the amber.

- Keep your necklace out of the water as much as possible, as this will pro-long the life of the cord.

-Avoid getting products such as body creams, sunscreens, repellents, perfumes and soaps on the necklace, as they speed the deterioration of the silk.

-To clean your necklace, wash in warm water with a soft brush. Use a gentle soap only if necessary.

-Dry flat in the shade.

-The safety feature is the large ring on one end of the necklace. It's made of semi-soft metal (sterling silver) and will open at the split if the necklace is pulled hard, or a lot of weight is put on it. The large ring opens just enough to release the small ring on the same end of the necklace.

If this happens, the necklace is not broken. You simply hook the large ring back through the small ring and close it together with a small pair of pliers. Make sure there is no gap.

If you lose the ring, email me and I will send you some spares.

Please remember that this safety feature is not fail safe, I recommend supervising your child at all times whilst wearing the necklace.
